A few months ago I wrote a post about Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire and how high it ranked very high in the state for its Academic Program. What's great about Stevenson is that its not 100 percent about academics. In order to expose their students to the arts,Stevenson High School cancelled all its classes last week and provided a two day fine arts festival- named the Odyssey of Arts. All the students and teachers took classes in visual arts, theater, dance and media led by 250 outside professional presenters.
The students tried all sorts of new adventures and explored their own creativity in areas they never would experience if not for this program. My son, a sophomore at Stevenson High School enrolled in a Capella class and a Hebrew calligraphy class. My son would never have experienced these forms of art had it not been for this program.
Throughout the two day program, teachers and students presented a smattering of performances for the rest of the school to watch. This way all the students were able to watch these different art forms. The Odyssey program is sponsored by the Stevenson High School Fine Arts Division and the Stevenson High School Foundation. Area Businesses and restaurants donated money, food and supplies to provide lunches an snacks for the presenters.
This program takes place every two years, so each student is exposed to it twice during their high school years. In two years, I am definitely going to volunteer to help run this program.
